The Orthodox church is the Second largest Christian Church in the
world with about 350 million members, which is about 3.51% of the
world's population. Orthodoxy has suffered but survived a life time of
discrimination and persecutions. Orthodoxy today, is mainly found in
Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and now a growing religion in
North America.
The Orthodox Church is not a single church but rather a family of 14 "autocephalous," or self
governing, churches. They are united in their understanding of the sacraments, doctrine, liturgy,
and church government, but each administers its own affairs. The head of each autocephalous
church is called a "patriarch" or "metropolitan."
Patriarchs are heads of the church. They usually over see anywhere from a country to an entire
continent. A Metropolitan are territorial leaders of a country, region or city.
