St. George the Great Martyr
In 275 A.D., St. George was born in Lydda of
Cappadocia in Palestine. He rose to the highest
ranks of the Roman Legion. But then Emperor
Diocletian, the great persecutor of Christians,
demanded his soldiers offer pagan sacrifices as
proof of their loyalty. Then impious Diocletian
started a persecution against Christians. He issued
a royal order so that all the Christians who denied
Christ should be worthy of royal honours while all
those who would not be convinced to do so would
be punished with death. St. George was tortured
to the point that his body was cut in pieces.
St. George is one of the most
popular saints among
Orthodox Christians. Many
Arab and Greek faithful have
experienced miracles through
the prayers of St. George
Saint George is depicted not
in his most common
iconography, on a horse,
killing the dragon, which
represents the devil.
The miracles that have been
performed at his grave are
without number. His
appearances in dreams to
those who, think of him, have
sought his help, from that
time up to the present day.
With his resistance to deny God and the true church,  the worshippers of the
idols could bear with the saint no more. So, they caught him and brought him to
the emperor asking from him to issue his decision against him. The emperor
ordered the saint to be beheaded together with empress Alexandra. The saint
was beheaded, while empress Alexandra prayed in prison and commended her
soul to the hands of God.
St. George  raised a dead
man to life by his prayers,
many embraced the Christian
faith. Among these was the
Emperor's wife, Alexandra
