Orthodox Christian Teachings
What Is the Orthodox Church?
The Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, with roots stretching all the way back to the apostles and the earliest followers of Jesus. Sometimes called the “Eastern Orthodox Church,” it’s known for its beautiful worship, deep spiritual traditions, and a strong sense of continuity with the ancient Church. Orthodox Christians see themselves as part of a living tradition, preserving the faith as it was handed down from Christ and His apostles.

Core Beliefs: The Heart of Orthodoxy
At the center of Orthodox belief is the Holy Trinity—one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Orthodox Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who became human for our salvation. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He opened the way for us to be united with God. Salvation, in the Orthodox view, isn’t just a one-time event but a lifelong journey of transformation—growing in love, holiness, and closeness to God.

The Bible and Holy Tradition
The Orthodox Church treasures the Bible as the inspired Word of God. But it also holds “Holy Tradition” in high regard. This means the faith isn’t just about what’s written in Scripture, but also about the teachings, worship, and practices passed down through the centuries. The writings of the early Church Fathers, the decisions of the Ecumenical Councils, and the lived experience of the Church all help guide Orthodox Christians in their faith.

Worship: Experiencing Heaven on Earth
Worship in the Orthodox Church is meant to be an encounter with the living God. The Divine Liturgy, celebrated every Sunday and on feast days, is the highlight of Orthodox worship. It’s a time when the community gathers to pray, sing, and receive Holy Communion—the Body and Blood of Christ. The services are full of ancient prayers, incense, candles, and beautiful icons (holy images), all designed to lift our hearts and minds to God.

The Seven Sacraments: Encounters with God’s Grace
Orthodox Christians participate in seven main sacraments, also called “Holy Mysteries.” Each one is a special way to receive God’s grace and grow in faith:
-
Baptism: Entry into the Christian life, symbolizing death to sin and new birth in Christ.
-
Chrismation: Anointing with holy oil, receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
-
Eucharist (Holy Communion): Receiving Christ’s Body and Blood for spiritual nourishment and unity.
-
Confession (Penance): Admitting our sins before God and receiving forgiveness and healing.
-
Marriage: The blessing of a lifelong union between a man and a woman, centered on Christ.
-
Holy Orders: Ordination of deacons, priests, and bishops to serve the Church.
-
Unction (Anointing of the Sick): Prayers and anointing for healing of body and soul.
These sacraments aren’t just rituals—they’re real encounters with God, helping us at every stage of life.

Prayer and Daily Life
Prayer is woven into the daily life of Orthodox Christians. Whether it’s a simple morning prayer, lighting a candle before an icon, or joining in the church’s services, prayer is how we stay connected to God. The Church encourages regular prayer at home, reading the Psalms, and participating in the life of the parish. Fasting, giving to those in need, and acts of kindness are also important ways Orthodox Christians live out their faith.

The Saints and the Theotokos
The Orthodox Church honors the saints—men and women who have lived holy lives and are examples for us to follow. The Virgin Mary, known as the Theotokos (“God-bearer”), is especially loved and respected as the mother of Jesus and a model of faith and humility. Orthodox Christians ask the saints to pray for them, just as we might ask a friend to pray for us.

Living the Faith: A Journey Together
Being Orthodox isn’t just about what we believe—it’s about how we live. The Church is a family, supporting each other in faith, love, and service. Orthodox Christians strive to love God and neighbor, forgive others, and seek humility in all things. The journey isn’t always easy, but the Church provides guidance, encouragement, and the grace of God to help us along the way.
